Barrel Mixer MBEO-5000 — Heavy-Duty Electric Open-Head Drum Mixer
Industrial Drum Mixers (Barrel Mixers) for 200 L / 55-Gallon Drums — Manufacturer Teknomatik
Industrial drum mixers (also called barrel mixers, drum agitators, 200 L drum mixers or 55-gallon drum mixers) are specialised devices that mix, disperse and homogenise media directly inside a 200 L (55-gal) drum or barrel — with no need to transfer the product into a separate process vessel. This shortens the technological cycle, reduces raw-material consumption and eliminates transfer losses. Teknomatik drum mixers handle all three classical duty modes: blending miscible liquids, re-suspension of settled solids and dissolution of powders.
shop.teknomatik.eu is the official sales channel of Teknomatik Europe Sp. z o.o. — a European manufacturer of industrial mixers for IBC totes, drums and pails. This category groups 5 drum/barrel mixer models covering two drum configurations (open-head drum via top-mount clamp / drum cover, and closed-head drum via 2" bung-entering folding propeller), two drive types (electric, pneumatic) and the full viscosity range from 500 to 5,000 mPa*s (cP). Several models are dual-use barrel + IBC tote mixers — fitted for both 200 L drums and 1000 L IBC totes thanks to the foldable ∅350 mm propeller that passes through narrow openings.

Open-head vs closed-head drum — which mount?
The single most important decision when choosing an industrial drum mixer is the drum configuration:
Open-head drum mixer — for drums with a removable top
An open-head drum (also "full-removable head", "removable lid drum") has a top that can be unbolted, leaving the entire drum opening accessible. These drums hold viscous products, pastes, granulates and any media that need to be loaded from the top. The Teknomatik open-head drum mixers (MBEO-500, MBEO-5000) mount on top of the drum via a top clamp / drum cover plate, with a full-size propeller that drops straight into the open drum. Higher mixing efficiency, larger propeller diameters available, easier cleaning.
Closed-head (tight-head) drum mixer — for sealed drums with 2" bung
A closed-head drum (also "tight-head drum") is fully sealed with only two small openings on top — typically a 2" NPT bung and a 3/4" vent bung. These drums hold liquid chemicals, solvents, paints and any product that needs sealed transport and storage. The Teknomatik closed-head drum mixers (MBEP-500, MBEP-5000, MBPP-1000) thread directly into the 2" bung, and a folding (foldable / collapsible) ∅350 mm propeller passes through the narrow bung opening and unfolds inside the drum. The same folding propeller also fits the standard DN150 (150 mm) screw cap of an IBC tote — making these models true dual-use barrel + IBC mixers.
Three duty modes — what an industrial drum mixer actually does
- Blending miscible liquids — combining two or more compatible liquids into a uniform batch inside a 200 L drum (e.g. base + thinner, water + concentrate, AdBlue dilution).
- Re-suspension of settled solids — re-dispersing solids that have sedimented inside the drum during transport or warehousing (pigments, fillers, catalysts, fine powders).
- Dissolution of powders — dissolving powdered ingredients into a liquid carrier (polymer powders, surfactants, water-soluble additives, dyes).
Electric vs pneumatic drum mixer — which to choose?
The MBEO and MBEP series use TEFC (totally enclosed fan-cooled) electric motors with IP55 ingress protection — quieter, more efficient and cheaper to run than pneumatic equivalents. The MBPP-1000 pneumatic drum mixer uses an oil-free (oilless) air motor fed at 6–7 bar — naturally intrinsically safe (no electric sparks), the right choice for solvent-based paints, flammable adhesives and any application near an Ex zone. For full ATEX certification in Zone 1 hazardous areas, the IBC-side MKP-5000 Ex can be repurposed with a drum adapter — contact our technical department for details.
Cross-use with IBC totes — one mixer, two containers
Four of the five drum models (MBEO-500, MBEP-500, MBEP-5000, MBPP-1000) are dual-use mixers — engineered so the same folding propeller fits both a 200 L drum (through the 2" bung) and a 1000 L IBC tote (through the DN150 / 150 mm screw cap). One mixer covers two container formats — a significant operational saving for plants that work with both drums and IBC totes. The full IBC mixer range is available on the IBC Mixers category page.
How to size an industrial drum mixer — step by step
- Drum configuration — open-head (full top removable, choose MBEO) or closed-head with 2" bung (choose MBEP / MBPP).
- Medium viscosity (cP / mPa*s) — water and solvents 1–10 mPa*s; water-based paints 100–500 mPa*s; liquid cosmetics 500–2,000 mPa*s; resins and solvent coatings 2,000–5,000 mPa*s. Pick the model whose number ≥ your maximum process viscosity.
- Drive type — electric (quieter, more efficient, needs 230/400 V mains) or pneumatic (intrinsically safe, no electricity, oil-free; needs 6–7 bar compressed air).
- ATEX / Ex zone — if the medium contains organic solvents, fuels or other flammable liquids, choose the pneumatic MBPP-1000 (naturally intrinsically safe) or contact us for an ATEX-certified version.
- Wetted parts — every Teknomatik drum mixer has a 316Ti acid-resistant stainless steel propeller approved for food contact (EC 1935/2004).
- Cross-use — if you also need to mix in 1000 L IBC totes, choose one of the four dual-use models (MBEO-500, MBEP-500, MBEP-5000, MBPP-1000).
Drum compatibility
Teknomatik industrial drum mixers fit standard 200 L (55-gallon) industrial drums:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between a drum mixer and a barrel mixer?
Functionally none — "drum mixer", "barrel mixer", "drum agitator" and "barrel agitator" are synonyms for an industrial mixer designed to mix media inside a 200 L (55-gallon) drum or barrel. "Drum" is the US-preferred term, "barrel" is more common in UK/EU procurement language. Teknomatik uses both interchangeably across this category.
Open-head or closed-head drum — which mixer do I need?
If your drum has a fully removable top lid (open-head), choose an MBEO model (top clamp / drum-cover mount with a full-size propeller). If your drum has a sealed top with only a 2" NPT bung opening (closed-head / tight-head), choose an MBEP electric or MBPP pneumatic model with a folding propeller that passes through the bung and unfolds inside the drum.
Can I use the same drum mixer with an IBC tote?
Yes — four of the five models (MBEO-500, MBEP-500, MBEP-5000, MBPP-1000) are dual-use mixers. The folding ∅350 mm propeller passes through both a 2" drum bung and a DN150 (150 mm) IBC screw cap. The exception is the heavy-duty open-head MBEO-5000, which is dedicated to open-head 200 L drums.
Which drum mixer for flammable solvents and solvent-based paints?
For routine solvent work without a formal Ex zone, the pneumatic MBPP-1000 (naturally intrinsically safe, oil-free) is the right choice. For formally classified Zone 1 / Zone 2 areas, contact our technical department — ATEX-certified versions of the bung-entering mixers are available (analogous to the IBC-side MKP-5000 Ex for Zone 1).
What viscosity can a Teknomatik drum mixer handle?
The range covers viscosities from 500 mPa*s (light chemistry — water-based paints, AdBlue, detergents — MBEO-500 / MBEP-500) up to 5,000 mPa*s (heavy chemistry — resins, solvent-based coatings, adhesives — MBEO-5000 / MBEP-5000). The MBPP-1000 pneumatic model handles up to 1,000 mPa*s.
Is the drum mixer suitable for food and pharma products?
Yes. The wetted propeller on every model is made of 316Ti acid-resistant stainless steel, approved for food contact under EC 1935/2004 — the same grade as Teknomatik IBC mixers. For higher hygienic specifications (FDA CFR 21 § 177.2600 documentation, 3-A Sanitary Standard adaptation), the mount can be specified in 1.4301 / 1.4404 stainless steel — please contact our technical department.
